The story of the holy Icon of Panagia Tricherousa

The story of the holy Icon of Panagia Tricherousa
( of The Three Hands )

You may have bowed to and kissed an Icon of Panagia Tricherousa (Panagia of the Three Hands) and might have wondered why it was painted like that.
This Icon is currently located in the Holy Monastery of Hilandari on Mount Athos.
The story of the icon is associated with the life of our Saint and God-bearing father John of Damascus, the known hymnwriter of our church.
Saint John was serving in Damascus where he had a great post. From there he wrote and spoke against the heresy of Iconoclasts.Because of this,he was slandered by the emperor of Byzantium,Leo the Isaurian, who informed the Damascus caliph that Saint John was allegedly committing treasonous acts against him. Then, having believed with no examination those accusations and slanders, the caliph of Damascus gave orders to cut off the right hand of John Damascene so that he could never write again, and then take it to the marketplace and hang it upon the town square. He did so firstly to imprint his dominion, and secondly to exemplify those who were envious of him.
John's hand was finally cut off.In the afternoon of the same day John asked some of the caliph's acquaintances to beg him and give John the cut-off hand. After that, the caliph gave the permission and commanded that John be given his cut-off hand.
Towards evening Saint John put his cut-off hand to its joint and fell to the ground before the icon of the Mother of God.He begged tearfully the Mother of the Most High to heal his hand, which had written in defence of Orthodoxy,so that he could write hymns to the Theotokos and keep defending Orthodoxy during those difficult days of Iconoclasm.:

"Our Lady Holy Mother ,and God-bearer,
my hand was cut off,for I defended the divine icons.
You are not unaware of the reason for which Leo raged like a lion,
and on account of this I beg You to come as quickly as possible
and cure my hand.
May the right hand of the Most High, the encarnate through You,
heal my right hand through Your beseeching,
so that I can write again in praise of You and the encarnate ,through You, Christ,
indite hymns in harmonious rhythms,
and contribute to the services of the Orthodox Faith,
since You have the power to do everything You want,as the Mother of God.....

.......
While Saint John passed the night in great pain praying for the aid of the Most Holy Theotokos,he fell asleep and miraculously Our Lady and Queen of Angels appeared to him in a vision and gazing mercifully at him said :

-Thy hand is now whole; sorrow no more and fulfill your promise...

Having awakened from sleep John found that his hand had been miraculously restored, with only a red scar about the wrist ,where it had been severed,as a testimony to the wondrous healing.
He then bowed to and kissed the icon of the Mother of God crying tears of joy and gratitude for Her beneficence and mercy towards him.
He immediately wrote three hymns to Panagia which are included in the THEOTOKARION and are chanted to the THEOTOKOS.
In thanksgiving he had a silver hand attached to the Icon, before which he had prayed, and ever since this Icon was named "of the Three Hands".
All the inhabitants and the caliph of Damascus were astonished at that miracle and John was honoured. The miracle was soon made known everywhere and God was glorified and Panagia was venerated. John abandoned the secular power, the honours and the glory and went to the Lavra Monastery of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified where he became a monk and bestowed his icon(of the Mother of God of Three Hands).
This wonderworking icon remained in the Lavra Monastery of Saint Sabbas from the mid of the eighth century A.D. to the thirteenth century. Then, the Lavra presented the Icon "of the Three Hands" in blessing to Saint Sabbas Archbishop of Serbia. When Saint Sabbas left Palestine,he took the Holy Icon to Serbia, where it remained in the Holy Monastery of Stamonitsa till the mid of the thirteenth century.During the time of an Invasion of Serbia by the Turks, some Christians, who wanted to protect the Icon, entrusted it to the safekeeping of Panagia Herself. They placed it upon a donkey which without a driver proceeded to Athos and stopped in front of the Hilandari Monastery.
When the monks of the Monastery saw that unexpected event, they accepted the precious present in awe and happiness and put the Holy Icon of the Mother of God in the Monastery's Sanctuary.
We do not know for how long the holy icon remained in the Sanctuary but during a time of discord over the choice of Igumen, after the igumen of the Monastery had died, the Mother of God was dissatisfied and intervened miraculously in the following way.
During a service, the monks of the Monastery noticed that the holy Icon was not in its usual position in the Sanctuary, but it was in the place of the igumen,in the parathronion(side-throne).
The monks thought that someone had moved it there,so they replaced it to its initial position inside the Sanctuary and after that, they shut the doors of the temple. But the next day, despite the precautions, the Icon was again found in the parathronion.
Being in fear, query and awe the monks once again took the Icon back into the Sanctuary but for the third time the Icon was found in the place of the igumen, and by divine economy,a hermit monk came to the church service and mentioned to the monks a vision he had, through which Theotokos gave the following commandment...:
......Go and tell the monks,my children, that from now on I am going to head the Monastery myself
so that any discord over the choice of Igumen can be avoided....
The monks thanked the Mother of God in tears and prayers and from that time Her Holy Icon has occupied the igumen's place in the temple. At the Hilandari Monastery there is chosen only a vicar and the monks take a blessing for every obedience from the Icon.
In the Icon Panagia has an expressive look full of affection and at the same time austerity and She is Rightholding ,that is, She is holding our Lord on Her right arm.It is considered by experts to be one of the icons that St. apostle Lucas had painted and presented to the Mother of God in order to thank Her and Panagia blessed them saying ,:...May the grace of the Lord be with them..
It is 110×90cm and has a silver and gold covering and precious gems as oblations by Christians, who received and relished miracles from the Icon.
May all of us,who read its story and honour it reverently, have its blessing and have the Mother of God as our cohabitant and fellow traveller in all our days and reach unity in the faith and honour the MOTHER OF GOD,AMEN.....

From the Palestine,godly-minded Sabbas brought unto us thy venerable Icon, which is known as

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ORTHODOX AND PROTESTANT CHRISTIANS,LUTHERANCALVINISTS...AND...
1.They do not accept the perpetual virginity of the THEOTOKOS,but they blasphemously say that PANAGIA gave birth to more children ,those who are called in the Gospel as siblings of the Lord ,but in fact they were Joseph's children from an earlier marriage to his first deceased wife.

The Patriarch's speech at the enthronement of the Bishop

In his address, with deep emotion, His Beatitude said:
Your Grace, elected Bishop Athanasios of Kisumu and West Kenya and beloved brother in the Lord,
“My you be strengthened with all power giving thanks to the father who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light”. (Colossians 1:11-12)
The hour of Missionas in the vast and great country of Kenya “has indeed come”. The fullness of time has arrived, the time of sowing has come as has the time of reaping. At this sacred moment of your ordination as Bishop, I wish to stand paternally opposite you and in a spirit of love and advice, to weave into your thoughts my expectations and visions for you, my beloved son Fr. Athanasios.
Firstly I want to say to you that the Theology of our church is not only produced through the University desks and the amphitheatres of the Theological Faculties. The Theology of our Church is not a double-headed Theology. It is not academic. It does not begin and end in libraries and University laboratories. The Theology of our Church begins at the Holy Altar! That is the greatest Theological Table which produces the one Theology – the Theology of the Immaculate Lamb. On the Holy Altar is the sacrificial lamb. It is the broken, divided and never expended Christ. He is the centre “of the entire Church”. He is the lighting strength, the source of Sanctity, from which all of creation, strengthened both in logic and intellect sends up the eternal doxology.
So our Orthodox faith cannot be made protestant! Because at its centre is Christ. The Crucified Christ! The Risen Christ! The One who Ascended in glory from us to the Heavens and the eternal – the One who is always with us. This is the faith of the Orthodox, the faith of our Fathers! It is a faith that cannot be privatised. It is a faith that is not recorded in the margins of a private agreement or a notarial act!
The Church Contract is the Cross of the Lord and His signature is His blood! Ad now that I have briefly told you what the Orthodox Theology and our faith are, I will tell you about its Missionarypaths! The Mission which in latter years has also become known as Missionary Work, is in our Church’s DNA. It is in its nature. It is its natural path. It is the life of its Life.
With careful yet powerful steps it moves to those outside, to meeting with others, those who are of other faiths, who are different, strangers, aliens, in order to make them brothers of Christ. Not a fan! Not to make him his personal property! Not an applauder! Rather a brother and friend of Christ, of the eternal friend of the young, as well as of people of every age. Most specifically, Missionary Work in the land of the Kenyans, has today more than ever become a weighty matter. The first fruits have flourished!
The first foundations have been created and the first basics for Evangelization of souls which hunger for a selfless and genuine Orthodoxy, have also been created. This is what you need to order and to teach, not only with your words, but in your manner and ethos of life. Missionary work i6s not advertised through photographs and electronic media. This is not always Missionary work. You do Missionary work with the beating of your heart when it is hurting with those who hurt. When it rejoices “with those who rejoice and cries with those who cry”. When you are kneading the leaven of faith and you make it an offering of love with the Cross and Death, dying and rising every day, every hour, every minute.
My brother, Fr Athanasios, At this sacred hour, keep my heartfelt and paternal words in your heart. And proceed with obedience in the will of the Lord. With obedience to the Alexandrian Throne and its Primate who called you. Here from the Patriarchal See I will follow with love and interest the steps you take and your Apostolic efforts. Our extensive references to your Patriarch must always be your primary concern. The Diocese awarded to you is not foreign to you. You are flesh of the flesh of our Kenyan brothers. Love them even more as Bishop and Father.
Teach them to love Christ’s name above all. Teach them about the Evangelist Mark. Make them feel that they are the children of a glorious Patriarchate, of Alexandria and of All Africa, which is fully aware of the meaning of Love. For centuries it has been toiling to make this love a way of existence and life. In your personal Pentecost, the day of your ordination as Bishop, together with all the love of those of us who came to rejoice with you, invisibly present are also the entire choir of the Saints of our Church of Alexandria, our great Hierarchs and Ecumenical Teachers, and the Venerable Abbas of the Desert of the Thebaid. Particularly present, is Saint Nicholas who celebrates his feast day today and St Nektarios of Pentapolis who at this same Holy Altar was ordained Hierarch.
I pray that the Most Merciful God will grant to your Hierarchal journey, the forbearance, wisdom and merciful heart of these saintly Hierarchs, the simplicity, the patience and meekness of our Holy Abbas. Please know that my paternal love will always be with you, next to you, as well as the love and prayer of the Holy Hierarchs who elected you, at every step of your hierarchal journey. In this world that is becoming steadily more inhuman, become a preacher of hope in the Merciful God. As Christians we have the privilege of being happy people. Our Lord Himself, immediately after His Resurrection, said as His first word “rejoice”. The sad and desperate person is the most unfair to God. As Missionaries we have a duty to proceed with joy where there is no path, because we open out the way as we proceed, inspiring in our brothers and sisters that God brings solutions where human logic and inability stops.
Only in this manner will we reveal the genuine human face, which is never predictable. In ascertaining the difference, we should not be afraid, but should rejoice in the potential of finding a meeting point with someone else, someone different, on many levels, because in the spiritual world there is no monotony and no boredom. And unity in Christ is not afraid of diversity, rather it gives it meaning and enriches it. It is this insoiration that contemporary man needs and this is the greatest contribution which our Church makes to the hard reality of our times.
My brother Athanasios, Go in peace! “And doing this you will save yourself and those who hear you”! Much strength to the enormous Ministry of your Hierarch
